News from Just Massage
Just Massage (www.justmassage.org.vn), a massage clinic that employs visually impaired therapists opened by Action for the City in 2007,continues to become an increasingly successful and self-sustaining business.
The first half of 2009 has brought some notable changes and improvements.
JM has recently gained three new fully trained therapists: Ms. Phan Thi Hoa, Mr. Bui The Thang and Mr. Duong Van Dan. The therapists, who all previously practiced traditional Vietnamese massage, completed a three-month training course in Swedish and Shiatsu massage techniques, as well as other soft skills for a masseur. They were instructed by two of the senior JM therapists and also studied professional English with a foreign AFC volunteer. After two probationary months, the therapists received full certification in May. Already, the new therapists have gained loyal regular customers.
JM also has a new manager: Ms. Tran Nha Thanh. Ms. Thanh took over the position involving operation and strategy management in April 2009. Her vision for JM includes creating more job opportunities for the visually impaired, increasing the diversity and quality of services, expanding the customer base and increasing the visibility of JM and its services. Improving the business model, she said, is crucial to creating more job opportunities for people with disabilities.
If you go to JM, you may notice some changes in its appearance. Softer lighting, fresh flowers and a fresh soothing aroma create a more relaxed atmosphere for the customer, said Ms. Thanh. JM also has some new items for sale, including cotton pajamas, JM’s specialty fresh ginger tea, Betterday Fair Trade Organic tea and coffee, and Karibon transit face masks (www.karibon.com), which are high quality masks manufactured by disadvantaged women in Viet Nam.
