Neighborhood Empowerment Groups complete first trial
On May 21, five neighborhood groups—from Dong Xuan, Phuc Tan, Thuong Dinh and Yen Hoa wards and the UNESCO Cycling Group—finished their first trial month as part of the Neighborhood Empowerment project.
The 60 participants are very excited about their role in adapting a neighborhood empowerment program successfully implemented in Ballymund, Ireland to a Vietnamese context. In the first month, each group experimented with sustainable actions in one of five areas: rubbish, energy, water, safer homes and conscious consuming.
The enthusiasm of the adaptation teams contributed much to the one-week training in April led by GAP International and GAP Ireland. Working with GAP Ireland and GAP International, Action for the City is in the process of incorporating feedback from the adaptation teams into the Sustainability Workbook from Ireland, which structures the program. The second version of the workbook will be tested in June-July when the five groups each experiment with a different sustainable action.
Action for the City and the adaptation teams are looking forward to fully operating as an Action Team and recruiting at least six more neighborhood groups to join the program before the end of the year.
Participants had many positive things to say about the project so far:
“We are improving the quality of life through behavior change!”
“The project is useful for myself and increases responsibility within the community!”
“We need to develop this model so that we contribute to reducing environmental pollution!”
The Neighborhood Empowerment project aims to address social and environmental issues in Ha Noi through supporting bottom-up resident action. It is funded by Irish Aid and GAP International and implemented by Action for the City.
