Project Result: Students Vote for Popular Restaurants
With two Food Safety Festivals—on May 10 at Hanoi University of Science and May 13 at Hanoi University—Action for the City helped students and local restaurant owners celebrate clean, safe food

At the Festivals, the cleanest restaurants were announced!

1225 student from Hanoi University of Science evaluated 27 restaurants, and 520 students of Hanoi University evaluated 18 restaurants, usingstandards set by the Viet Nam Food Administration. Criteria included the cleanliness of the floor, dishes and chopsticks, if servers wear gloves when preparing food, if the display table is at least 60cm tall and surrounded by glass, if food is covered when on display, and if fresh and cooked foods are kept separate. At HUS, the Student Cantina (at the dormitory compound) and Tra Sua Tran Chau San San (161 Luong The Vinh) were the winners. At Hanoi University, the Student Cantina, S Club and Bun Ca (all on campus) took the top prize. Champion restaurant owners received gifts and certificates to display in their shops, as well as a chance to talk directly with their customers about food safety.

The Festivals were the culmination of months of hard work by student volunteers supported by AFC staff. Students surveyed restaurants near their universities or university dormitories to evaluate food safety. They also participated in several training courses by AFC about planning, communication and teambuilding; helped design a website about the project and food safety in general (www.hangquansach.org); and planned the Festivals. Future plans involve student volunteers advising restaurants that did not do well on the survey about how to improve. Another evaluation, followed by more Food Safety Festivals, will take place this August and September, after the summer holidays.

The Students Voting for Safe Restaurants project encourages young people to exercise their consumer power by demanding restaurants take responsibility for the safety of their food. It was awarded a prize from the World Bank’s Vietnam Innovation Day 2008.
